For ages 12-17

LESSON PLAN

Day 1: (3 hours)

Objective:
Delve deep into color theory concepts and ignite creativity with an icebreaker.

Ice Breaker and Discussion (20 mins):

  • Begin with the question: "When was the last time you colored?"

  • Discuss elementary concepts and wrongful assumptions involved in socially accepted ways to color as learned in elementary school.

Color Theory Lecture (20 mins):

  • Explore the color wheel, discussing primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.

  • In-depth discussion on complimentary, analogous, and monochromatic color schemes.

  • Discuss the psychological impact of colors and their cultural associations.

Hands-on Activity 2 - Color Mixing (40 mins):

  • Provide extra paper for a hands-on color mixing exercise to demonstrate the creation of various shades and tones.

  • Discuss how to achieve harmony within a color scheme.

Hands-on Activity 1 - Color Scheme Exploration :

  • Provide a coloring page from "Book of the Bizarre."

  • For learners with linguistic intelligence, they can take a moment to envision a story to go along with their picture and write it on the back.

  • Instruct students to choose a specific color scheme and apply it to the coloring page, considering the emotional tone to reflect the story.

Break (10 mins)

Day 2: (3 hours)

Objective:
Dive deeper into colored pencil techniques, including burnishing, layering, and blending. Discuss the quality of different colored pencil brands.

Briefly review previous day(10 mins):

Burnishing, Layering, and Blending (60 mins):

  • Provide scrap paper so students can test these techniques

  • Demonstrate burnishing techniques to create a smooth, shiny finish.

  • Teach layering methods for building up colors and creating depth.

  • Discuss blending techniques to achieve seamless transitions between colors.

Quality of Colored Pencils (25 mins):

  • Discuss the importance of using high-quality colored pencils.

  • Compare and contrast different brands, discussing pigment intensity, blending capabilities, and durability.

Hands-on Activity 2 - Applying Techniques (70 mins):

  • Encourage students to fill a part of their coloring page from "Book of the Bizarre" with each of the techniques.

  • Instruct students to apply burnishing, layering, and blending techniques so they try all of them.

Day 3: Unveiling Alternative Techniques and Creative Exploration (3 hours)

Objective:
Introduce unspecified alternative techniques and encourage creative exploration. Use differentiated instruction to cater to various learning styles.

Review and Discussion (20 mins):

  • Review concepts from the previous days.

  • Discuss the benefits of kinesthetic, visual, interpersonal, verbal linguistic, and intrapersonal learners within the context of the lesson.

Hands-on Activity 3 - Alternative Techniques (110 mins):

  • Erasers, blending with a color, various types of whozawhatzit’s for colored pencils, mark making

  • Instruct students to experiment with these techniques on a new coloring page.

Differentiated Instruction (Throughout the Day):

  • Provide multiple options for coloring techniques and approaches.

  • Kinesthetic learners can color with their feet or mouth (as long as it’s their supplies)

Show and Tell (25 mins):

  • Allow students to share their colored pages and discuss their experiences.

  • Emphasize the importance of creative exploration.

Closing Remarks and Certificate Distribution (15 mins):

  • Thank students for their participation.

  • Distribute certificates of completion.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

With a background deeply rooted in the public school system, Rahela Laquidara has mastered the art of teaching standards, safety protocols, statewide goals, and more. Her teaching journey has equipped her with expertise in lesson plan development, curriculum design, brain-based learning, differentiated instruction and scaffolding.

Currently on a break from the public education hustle, Rahela eager to concentrate on teaching art. Her North Carolina teaching license is shining bright, ready for action. The colorful pages of her coloring book, Book of the Bizarre, is her my secret weapon, capturing the imagination of creative minds everywhere.
